10,000 is the number of steps that a person is "supposed to" walk each day for good health. Yes, ten thousand. Most people take only 1000 to 3000 each day.
I bought a pedometer last week (which has been on my to-do list for weeks) and have been tracking my steps, aiming for 10,000 each day. The great thing about a pedometer is that you can tell - just by looking at it - if you are being too inactive during the day. And if so, you can do something about it...like take your dog for an extra long walk. :)
Now, living in a 1-bedroom NYC apartment and having an office in my living room, I don't really walk a lot anymore. Definitely not as much as I used to when I was walking to the subway to walk to my corporate office every day! My walking now is limited to dog walks and errand running.
But I am simply amazed at how many steps I rack up on this thing simply by doing what I do everyday.
I never realized how fidgety I am until I was diagnosed with ADD. At that point, I became aware that I get up from my seat all the time and tend to annoy others with pencil tapping and chair swiveling.
And with my many trips to the coffee maker and bathroom, in addition to my telephone pacing, window gazing, and seat changing, I get nearly 5000 steps in without even trying!
Wow...I wonder how many extra pounds I'd have if I wasn't so fidgety!
